Keith and Norma approached Hunter Architects & Planners in 2011 with a brief to construct their dream home. Reverend Keith was due to retire, and on leaving his post with the church, the couple would also have to leave the vicarage, their family home for a number of years. With a background in engineering, Keith had always wanted to build his own house, so when he discovered an infill plot of land adjacent to another church in the area, Keith jumped at the chance to turn his dreams into reality.
Although their former vicarage was a very traditional dwelling, Keith and Norma were keen to construct a very modern, sustainable home for their retirement. Conscious of rising energy bills and a limited income in their retirement, Keith and Norma sought to achieve Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, as well as Lifetime Homes and Secured by Design standards. At the start of this new chapter in their lives, the lifetime homes standard was of particular interest to the couple, to ensure that their home would suit their needs for a good number of years to come. Far from being a retirement bungalow though, the resultant four bedroom family home is intended to give the couple flexibility in the future, with the installation of a lift being the only obvious concession.
The house that Hunter Architects and Planners designed maximises the potential of the site, whilst creating a sympathetic dwelling that opens onto the sizeable garden at the rear. Externally the twin gabled frontage sits comfortably in the street scene; Internally, the steeply pitched roof creates an almost cathedral like entrance hall, somehow fitting for a retired reverend.
